  16. What astute insight!   One day I hope you'll see the real
  17. language hoax that has been perpetutuated by people like
  18. yourself:  the real hoax is the idea that languages ought
  19. to be evaluated in the small: "what looping structures does
  20. it have", etc...    This thinking has led us into a 
  21. "not-invented-here" mindset for evaluating languages.  We 
  22. don't care if a new language can only run on some obscure
  23. brand of machine, and it cannot interface to X, or reuse the
  24. bulk of the world's software, or if it programs cannot be tailored
  25. for different architectures.

  27. What C and Unix gave us, and taught
  28. us, was far more valuable than the lessons of the Algol-60s and all
  29. its derviatives.  I'm not saying there were no valuable lessons
  30. there, but nothing to date has come anywhere close to what C and
  31. C++ have achieved.  And the reason for these languages dominating
  32. is not some silly hoax mistake.  They have better survival and
  33. cooperation characteristics than their opposition.
